My Story

Growing up, I had seen many family members struggle with mental health and addiction issues. I ended up facing the same struggles and was put on psychiatric medications in middle school. Many of the medications  had black box warnings for teens, and had terrible reactions to them. I knew there had to be a better way.

While in college, I developed a connection with the nature and learned to love movement. Exercise became not a way to change by body, but to nourish and empower it. I felt amazing and slowly stopped smoking cigarettes, binge drinking and got serious about nutrition.

I was originally studying environmental science and ecology. I decided to switch my major to cell biology/pre-med when I had a naturopathic doctor really help me with a chronic health condition.

I had recurrent sore throats, fatigue, and malaise every few months. I was sick of taking antibiotics, even though my strep tests were negative. A sought the naturopathic doctor in town who took one look at my tongue and said, "you have thrush." It was probably a co-infection from reactivated mononucleosis which I had since high school.

I took a herbal tincture and felt better than ever, with more energy and positive outlook that I could heal! My bouts of illness got less severe and further in between, until this chronic illness was in the past. Thank you to Dr. Houck for a thorough assessment and to the herbs for their medicine and eye opening discovery of a new option for health.

I thought naturopathic medicine would be a wonderful way to bridge my love of nature, plants and people, so I started my doctorate program the summer after I graduated college, after all somewhere within me always thought I would be a doctor, but couldn't envision it for myself in the conventional sense. I was right. I am still thankful for the perspective of holistic health my education offered me.

My philosophy

I believe in the healing power of nature and that the body has an innate ability to heal . We are so inundated with what we "should" do for our health that most of us have completely lost sight of our own intuition for healing. Symptoms are the body's way of telling us what's wrong, and with some insight, what we should do about it. The conventional medical paradigm is to use drugs to block symptoms at all cost, with no real look into causes or connections, and certainly no long term healing.

My job is to help educate my patients on how and why these symptoms are occurring, and empower them to make changes to support the body's own healing. We work with mindset, nutrition and lifestyle changes to bring you back into balance. I often recommend herbal or nutrient therapies to help decrease symptom severity and work on potential underlying causes. Mindfulness and intuition around what our bodies, minds, and souls really need is cultivated in our sessions!

My goal is that through co-exploration I can guide my patients back to their most vibrant health. l always try to work myself out of the job. If you understand why things are happening and what to do about them for yourself, you won't need me, or you will need me much less often. When this happens, I know we are on the right track!

My approach is different in that I also always incorporate energetic medicines or mindfulness practices into my treatment recommendations. Many women are frustrated when their provider tells them the symptoms are all in their head or are psychosomatic. To some degree this is true, but it should not be a dismissal but an invitation to deeper healing. My work looks at these deep connections between the human energy field and autonomic nervous system. This way we can best address mental, emotional and spiritual symptoms associated with conditions like PMS, infertility and post-partum mood changes.

My patients who get better are willing to commit to the process, do the work, and take responsibility for their health. I make recommendations for herbs and energetic medicines to each person, and we get to watch nature and your body do the healing! This does not mean I do not "believe" in conventional medicine. I will always tell you if pharmaceutical medication may be our best bet, but discuss what to do first, or guidance on how to support conventional treatments will always be given. Patient preference and informed consent are my priorities. I strive to stay educated on trauma, and eating-disorder, informed practice.

My perspectives are influenced by intuitive eating, and health at every size principles, so you will never get calorie or weight loss recommendations from me. There are many practitioners that specialize in this if that is your goal. I care way more about my patients relationship with food, body image, and movement than any number on a scale and I am so glad you are here.
